Next Meeting Thursday May 17th, 2012 Clovis Democratic Club meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at the HomeTown Buffet, in Clovis, located at 458 West Shaw Ave. at Peach. Meeting begins at 6:00PM, but many members arrive early to partake in the Buffet.
Message from Our President:
First of all, I would like to thank those of you who are helping with the booth at Big Hat Days. We are working on two of the goals of our club in making our presence known in Clovis and registering Democratic voters. The Chamber does not make this easy for us, but your dedication is appreciated. It is April and less than two months to the primary election in June. Educating ourselves and the community about candidates and issues will be a central focus of our meetings until the primary, and of course, on into the election in November. At our meeting this month, we will have the opportunity to meet Richard Rojas, the Democratic candidate for Assembly District 23, and to hear about high speed rail which is a major political issue in our state. I hope that all of you will be there and bring your friends and neighbors!
Jeni-Ann Kren
Big Hat Days 2012! Huge thanks to all who staffed the booth at this years Clovis Fest, held last April 14th and 15th. Once again we were relegated to the spot on 4th Steet, halfway to Woodworth. See more about this on the top right ---------->
Heard on the Street The other night, Mitt Romney gave a speech expressing the timeless core values that he will believe in until at least tomorrow.
President Obama's Polling numbers jumped last week when Rocker Ted Nugent announced at the NRA convention that he would "either be dead or in jail" by next year if Obama is reelected. Seems voters are excited with the prospect of the Nug's eventual demise or incarceration.
| Clovis Democrats Make the News
A note in the Fresno Bee's weekly political column prompted a feature on KMPH (Fox 26) regarding the repeated placement of the Clovis Democratic Club's Big Hat Days Booth out to the fringes of the event.
Yes, for last four years, whoever in the Chamber of Commerce charged with making booth assignments has placed us on very western end of 4th Street, causing probably 2/3rd's of the foot traffic to bypass us.
Vistors to our booth have long told us we should speak to someone, do something about it. Well this year when it was done again, a letter was written to the Bee that sparked all the attention. The rest of the membership is grateful for their effort and grateful to Jeni Kren and Lucy Elgin for doing the interviews.

Supervisor Perea Speaks on High-Speed Rail
At our April meeting we were pleased to have as our guest speaker the District 3 member of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors, Henry Perea Sr.. Mr. Perea had just returned from a trip to Sacramento for a meeting on the new Revised Plan for California's High-Speed Rail.
He spoke of how the new plan accellerates the construction timetable by five years and trims $30 Billion from it's expected cost. The Supervisor's enthusiasm for the project was evident as he spoke of the expected increase of 20 million residents in the state by 2050, and how we would move all those people around.
It seems that wider freeways aren't really possible, and most metro airports cannot be expanded with additional runways, as they are now tightly surrounded by industry and residences. He also noted that federal funding for High Speed Rail was made possible by President Obama. If Mitt Romney gets elected next November, opposition by Republican Congressmen in our area may lead to those funds being pulled and sent to the North-East Transportation Corridor.
All the more reason to work hard for President Obama.
